66 People Are Evacuated From Sudan To Saudi Arabia After Conflict

The evacuation of Indians from Sudan was a topic of conversation between Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar and his Saudi counterpart Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud on Tuesday

New Delhi:- 66 people from 12 different countries, including some Indian nationals, have been evacuated from the conflict-torn Sudan to Saudi Arabia. The first officially announced evacuation of civilians since fighting started took place on Saturday, when a ship carrying Saudi citizens and the other nationals arrived in Jeddah.

The evacuation of Indians from Sudan was a topic of conversation between Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar and his Saudi counterpart Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud on Tuesday.The Saudi foreign ministry tweeted, “In the execution of the directives of the Kingdom’s Leadership, we are pleased to announce the safe arrival of the evacuated Kingdom citizens from Sudan and several nationals of brotherly and friendly countries, including diplomats and international officials.”

Among those who have arrived in Jeddah is the crew of a Saudi passenger plane that was hit by gunfire as it prepared to take off from Khartoum at the start of the fighting on April 15, according to the news agency AFP, citing Al-Ekhbariya.According to the broadcaster, the evacuees were transported by a convoy of vehicles to Port Sudan, where they boarded ships bound for Jeddah.

On the occasion of Eid, which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, the evacuees were greeted by officials and soldiers who distributed sweets.

Hundreds of people have been killed in clashes between forces loyal to Sudan army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his deputy turned rival Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, commander of the powerful paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Former allies seized power in a coup in 2021, but later feuded in a bitter power struggle. Hundreds of people have been killed and thousands have been injured in the conflict, which has largely taken place in Khartoum.

According to witnesses, heavy gunfire, loud explosions, and fighter jets roared in many parts of the capital this morning.
