AAP Vs BJP In High-Stakes MCD Mayor Election Today

After a ten-year hiatus, Delhi will have a single mayor, and the Aam Aadmi Party, which won the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) election, has fielded two candidates for the BJP.

Web Desk for India Today: In the most recent episode of Aam Aadmi Party vs. Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, the opposition party complained that a BJP leader had been named acting Speaker in advance of the MCD mayor election. Given that Delhi will soon have a new mayor, the L-choice G’s is expected to be a major discussion topic.

Today marks the first meeting of the newly elected Municipal Corporation since the AAP won the election in December, ending the BJP’s 15-year dominance.

Today will also see the election of the deputy mayor in addition to the swearing-in of council members and the election of the mayor. The AAP has Aaley Mohammad Iqbal, Jalaj Kumar, and Kamal Bagri as candidates for deputy mayor (BJP).

What you need to know about the mayoral race is provided below.

  1. The AAP wants its leader to be mayor after winning with 134 votes in the 250-member municipal House. “Kejriwal ki sarkar, Kejriwal ka Prashad” was one of the party’s campaign catchphrases.
  2. In addition to the 250 council members, 14 MLAs from Delhi, seven MPs for the Lok
Sabha and three MPs for the Rajya Sabha are nominated and have a vote in the
    mayor’s race.
  3. BJP councilor Satya Sharma was named pro-tem Speaker on Thursday in place of Mukesh Goyal, the AAP member that the Delhi administration had proposed.
  4. This will be the first time the entire city has a mayor after 2012. The municipal corporation had previously been split into three, each with its own mayor. It was united, and on December 4 there was a vote.
  5. There will be a secret ballot used for voting. Since it is difficult to determine who voted for whom in a secret ballot, any councilor is free to support any candidate of his choosing, therefore the anti-defection statute does not apply in this situation.
  6. Gyanesh Bharti and Ashwani Kumar took over as its municipal commissioner and special officer, respectively, however, the united entity took effect much earlier in May. After tomorrow, a mayor will take over and the position of the special officer will be abolished.
  7. In Delhi, the mayor is elected for five single-year terms on a rotating basis, with the first year reserved for women, the second for the open category, the third for the reserved category, and the remaining two also in the open category.
  8. Cross-voting among council members is allowed in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), where the anti-defection ordinance is not in effect. The BJP has asserted that the city would once more have a mayor who is a member of their party.
  9. For the position of mayor, Shelly Oberoi, Ashu Thakur from the AAP, and Rekha Gupta from the BJP are the three candidates.
