From the 13th of January, 288 of the world’s best hockey players will compete on
the turf in two cities in Odisha: Bhubaneswar and Rourkela. Both cities are
preparing to host the 15th Hockey World Cup, which will feature 16 teams. The
World Cup will be held in two cities for the first time. The World Cup matches will
be played at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar and at Birsa Munda International
Stadium in Rourkela until January 29. Only once has the Indian team won the
world championship, in 1975.
The most recent World Cup was held in India in 2018, with Belgium emerging
victorious. On January 13, the Indian team will kick off its World Cup campaign
against Spain. The team will then face England on January 15 and Wales on
January 19.
The Odisha government will offer each player Rs 1–1 crore if the Indian team is
successful in winning the World Cup this time, according to the Chief Minister of
Odisha Naveen Patnaik.
The teams were divided into 4 groups, with the winning team advancing to the quarterfinals
The 16 teams in the tournament have been divided into four groups. Each group
has four to four teams. The group’s top team will advance directly to the quarter-
finals, while the second and third-placed teams will play crossover matches
against the second and third-placed teams from the other group. The winning
team advances to the quarterfinals. The Kalinga Stadium will host the crossover,
quarter-finals, semi-finals, third-fourth place tie, and final.

Pakistan, the most dominant team, was unable to qualify
Pakistan is the most successful team in the Hockey World Cup, having won four times and finished second twice. However, the team was unable to qualify for this time. Except for Pakistan, all other Asian hockey-playing countries will be represented at the World Cup.
