By handling about 59.5 million passengers annually, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport has been ranked as the ninth busiest airport in the world by the Airports Council International (ACI) World for the year 2022. This is a notable accomplishment for the IGI Airport, which, prior to the pandemic, had attained the 13th position in 2021 and the 17th position in 2019. In a separate press release, Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) claimed that it was the only airport from South and South East Asia to make the top 10.

The Airports Council International (ACI) World has ranked the IGI Airport as the ninth busiest airport in the world for 2022, with a capacity to handle 59.5 million passengers annually. The airport is the sole one from south and southeast Asia to make the top 10. The top 10 airports saw an increase of 51.7% from 2021 and represent 10% of all traffic worldwide.

However, compared to 2019 figures, their total passenger traffic is still about 85% lower. ACI also stated that due to the resumption of international travel, the total number of passengers worldwide in 2022 was almost 7 billion, which represented a 53.5% increase from 2021 or a 73.8% recovery from 2019.

According to the ACI report, IGI Airport saw a 60.2% increase in passenger traffic from the previous year, but it is still 13.1% lower than the figures from 2019. This suggests that, while passenger traffic has stabilized, it has not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels.
