Atiq Ahmed, a gangster-turned-politician, was given a life sentence on Tuesday for the kidnapping of lawyer Umesh Pal in 2006. Atiq Ahmed and two others, Dinesh Pasi and Khan Saulat Haneef, were sentenced to an intense life sentence and were also forced to pay Umesh Pal’s family a one-lakh compensation. Moreover, a 5000 yen punishment has been levied on each of the three.

Atiq Ahmad, a gangster-turned-politician, and three other people were found guilty of kidnapping lawyer Umesh Pal, the key witness in the murder of Bahujan Samaj Party member Raju Pal, by an MP/MLA court in Prayagraj. On February 24, Umesh Pal was shot and killed in Prayagraj.

Atiq Ahmed and former corporator Dinesh Pasi were found guilty of violating several laws, including Section 364 A of the IPC (kidnapping someone and putting them in danger of being killed).

A 45-member team from the Uttar Pradesh Police took Atiq Ahmad from Gujarat to Prayagraj yesterday. He was brought to the Naini Central Prison and is now being held in a high-security barrack next to the female jail.

Lawyer Umesh Pal was later shot dead in Prayagraj on February 24, and Ahmad is the main suspect in his murder.

In a related incident, the Supreme Court also rejected Atiq Ahmed’s request for protection while he was in the UP Police’s custody. The don-turned-politician was given permission to ask the Allahabad high court for protection after claiming that his life was in danger, according to PTI. The decision was made by a bench of justices Ajay Rastogi and Bela M Trivedi.
