Trinamool Attacks BJP Over Amartya Sen‘s Property While Amit Shah Is In Bengal Union minister Amit Shah is in Bengal for the day

The focus of the Trinamool Congress’ assault on the BJP today was Union Minister Amit Shah’s visit to Bengal on the anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore’s birth while the Centrally-run Visva Bharati expelled another Nobel laureate, Amartya Sen.
Mr. Sen and the University both have a unique connection to Tagore. While Tagore founded Visva Bharati from a small school in Shantineketan, he also gave the name “Amartya” to the grandson of a close friend.

“Amit Shah comes to pay tribute to Rabindranath but a Nobel laureate, who was given the name Amartya by Rabindranath Tagore, is being served an eviction notice by Visva Bharati,” Bengal minister Shashi Panja remarked during the state’s official programme to commemorate Tagore’s birth anniversary.

Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, also contributed.

“Some people believe that Tagore was born in Shantiniketan. She made fun of BJP leader JP Nadda and Amit Shah, saying that certain people’s rallies result in the destruction of an Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar statue.

The first stop on Mr. Shah’s agenda today was a trip to Tagore’s ancestral home in Kolkata’s Jorasanko, where he paid the poet floral tributes. Mr. Shah is currently in Bengal.

“Previously, they were unable to distinguish between Tagore’s karmabhoomi and janmabhoomi (place of birth). In an ironic allusion to a gaffe by BJP chief JP Nadda, Shashi Panja stated today, “At least now people know he was born at Jorasanko.

A few years ago, Mr. Nadda incorrectly identified Santineketan, the current location of Visva Bharati University, as the poet’s birthplace. The Chief Minister made a suggestion today that the BJP leaders should be informed about the state rather than reading it “from a cheat sheet, or a teleprompter” when giving speeches.

Amartya Sen, who has been engaged in a conflict with the university for months, has received vociferous support over the past week from the state’s intellectual elite as well as the government’s Trinamool Congress.

The university asserts that Amartya Sen’s ancestral property Pratichi in Shantineketan is “illegally occupied” on the land that is connected to it. If the economist doesn’t leave the flat by the deadline, the University has threatened to evict him.

A bid by Visva Bharati to take some of the property was stopped last week by the Calcutta High Court.
