Cigarettes sold to North Korea resulted in a 52 million rupee fine: American company was targeted, and a deal was reached between 2007 and 2017

For selling cigarettes to North Korea, the United States fined a UK company Rs 52,000 crore. One of the biggest tobacco companies in the world, the British American Tobacco Company (BAT), has acknowledged selling cigarettes to dictator Kim’s nation through one of its subsidiaries. The transaction took place between 2007 and 2017.

According to the US Department of Justice, BAT also engaged in a number of financial fraud schemes in order to supply cigarettes to North Korean organisations. In violation of US sanctions, BAT sold tobacco products worth approximately Rs 35,000 crore to North Korea between 2007 and 2017 through subsidiaries.

Sim Hyon-sop, a North Korean banker, and Han Linlin, a Chinese assistant, who were all involved in the sale, have also been charged with crimes. But all three suspects are currently missing.

Justice Department reveals reward for three additional suspects

The Justice Department of America has posted a reward announcement on the banker sim for a total of Rs 40 crore. The remaining two accused have received a reward of between Rs. 4 and Rs. 4 crore. All three are charged with forging numerous documents in order to deliver leaf tobacco to North Korean cigarette manufacturers. He used them to facilitate the processing of a 600 crore rupee transaction from American banks. As a result, North Korean businesses had gained access to about 57 thousand crore rupees.

Kim the dictator is renowned for smoking

Kim Jong, the leader of North Korea, smokes a lot. The US requested a ban on tobacco exports to North Korea from the UN Security Council (UNSC) in May of last year. China and Russia, though, blocked it.

BAT operates in a number of prohibited countries, including Iran and Cuba.

In 2019, a BAT company report revealed that the company is operating in many countries where it is prohibited. Iran and Cuba are among them. According to the report, the company may face significant losses as a result of this. CEO Jack Bowles expressed regret that the company was involved in cases where sanctions were imposed. It lowers the company’s standard and credibility.

This company has its global headquarters in London and employs about 80,000 people. Statista estimates that the company made about Rs 2.8 lakh crore in revenue in 2022.
