footballer Priya, an 18-year-old football prospect from Chennai, passed away a few days after having surgery as a result of alleged medical malpractice.

The most significant aspect of her life was sports. She typically listened to me when I spoke to her, but she had her own ideas on sports. Lawrence told TNM about his younger sister Priya, who passed away on Tuesday, November 15, from multiple organ failure brought on by what is allegedly medical malpractice. “That was how important and personal sports was for her,” he said. Priya, a promising football player from Chennai who was 18 years old, passed away a few days after having surgery to repair torn ligaments in her right knee.

Priya, a first-year student in Queen Mary’s College’s physical education programme, was found to have a ligament tear in her right knee. The Peripheral Hospital at Periyar Nagar’s medical staff advised surgery to repair the damage. On November 7, the hospital performed the initial procedure. The doctors gave Priya a tight compression bandage and painkillers after she complained of leg pain that very same evening. Due to a possible blood clot in her leg, she was transferred to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) on November 8.

According to Lawrence, they took Priya to the hospital to treat her torn ligament. But they endangered her life by amputating her leg, he continues.

The limb of Priya was amputated on November 9. But nothing changed with regard to her condition. On Monday, November 14, she underwent a second follow-up procedure at RGGGH while under anaesthesia and using a ventilator. She passed away, though, on Tuesday morning.

Joel, Priya’s coach, told TNM that the medical staff and physicians at the Periyar Nagar hospital failed to explain to the family what they were doing and why they were performing the procedure. “They claimed there was no case sheet when the family requested it. She was transported to RGGGH in an ambulance with just an attendant. He also just dropped her off before leaving right away. How come they did that? The second query is, given that they lacked a specialist, why did they operate on her? They ought to have taken her right away to the public hospital, Joel argued.

A separate investigation revealed that two doctors at Peripheral Hospital had been negligent, and they had previously been reassigned. Ma Subramaniam, the health minister for Tamil Nadu, told a press conference on Tuesday morning that Priya’s arthroscopy, a procedure for identifying and treating joint issues, was completed successfully at Peripheral, but that the compression bandage used to prevent blood clotting was applied too tightly, damaging the blood veins.
