The first Ivy League institution to permanently abandon the requirement that undergraduate students submit their scores on standardised tests is Columbia University. As a result, candidates for undergraduate programmes won’t need to transmit their SAT and ACT scores anymore. On Wednesday, the institution posted an announcement about the choice on its Undergraduate Admissions homepage.

Importantly, since dropping the requirement in the wake of the COVID-19 epidemic for the 2020–21 academic year, Columbia University has not needed test scores from applicants. According to the New York Post, the institution has extended the policy through the 2023–2024 academic year in February.

The decision was “based in the concept that students are dynamic, multi-faceted individuals who cannot be defined by any single aspect,” the institution said. It also said that their method of evaluating applications emphasises a “holistic and contextual application evaluation process” and takes several variables into account.

The announcement stated, “Our review is purposeful and nuanced – respecting diverse backgrounds, voices, and experiences – in order to best determine an applicant’s suitability for admission and ability to thrive in our curriculum and our community, and to advance access to our educational opportunities.

In the meanwhile, as reported by Post, other Ivy League colleges have also expanded such test-optional rules in response to the epidemic, although none have permanently eliminated the requirement. Dartmouth, Brown, and Yale have not yet made a choice, but Harvard and Princeton have maintained their test-optional policy through the 2025–2026 academic year.

“Our application has been created to provide students the best chance and freedom to completely express themselves and highlight their academic abilities, hobbies, and objectives. Our application does not need to undergo standard testing, “In the release, the school stated.

To establish an applicant’s appropriateness for admission, potential to succeed in our curriculum and community, and to increase access to our educational opportunities, “our examination is intentional and nuanced—respecting different origins, opinions, and experiences,”

Tests were not required for admission to the institution during the 2020–21 academic year, which was the height of the coronavirus epidemic. In February of last year, the institution extended its policy until the admissions season for 2023–24.
