Elon Musk’s takeover, Twitter is facing a lawsuit accusing the company of firing employees without cause

Tuesday brought the latest legal action resulting from Twitter’s massive job cuts, accusing the social media giant of illegally terminating contract workers without notice after Elon Musk acquired the business last year.

According to the proposed class action lawsuit, which was filed in federal court in San Francisco, Twitter fired a large number of employees employed by the staffing company TEKsystems in November without giving them the 60 days’ notice required by US and California law.

Twitter is being sued in five additional cases in the same court for allegedly breaking these laws, discriminating against disabled employees, and picking out female employees for layoffs. Twitter has disputed the accusations.

Early in November, Elon Musk, who paid $44 billion (roughly Rs. 3,37,465 crore) to acquire the social media platform, fired about 3,700 workers, or half of its workforce, as a cost-cutting measure. Later, hundreds more workers left their jobs.

Requests for comment from Twitter and the defendant in the lawsuit, TEKsystems of Maryland, were not immediately fulfilled.

“While Elon Musk seems to think he’s saving the company money by avoiding these obligations, we plan to show him that not meeting his responsibilities can be a lot more costly,” Shannon Liss-Riordan, who represents the plaintiffs in all of the cases, said in an email.

According to Liss-Riordan, more than 1,700 former contractors and employees of Twitter who signed agreements to arbitrate legal disputes have also filed complaints in private arbitration. She claimed that none of the TEKsystems employees signed arbitration agreements.

Additionally, Liss-Riordan represents employees who have complained to a US labour board about Twitter, claiming they were let go for speaking out against the business, trying to organise a strike, and other actions covered by federal labour law.
