Violence: Manesar, a leader of the Bajrang Dal, is sought for his suspected involvement in the murder of two Muslim men earlier this year

New Delhi: Several farmer unions and Khap panchayats have called for peace and urged the arrest of cow vigilante Monu Manesar days after communal riots in Haryana’s Nuh.

On July 31, when a Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) parade was disrupted by rioters, riots erupted in Muslim-majority Nuh, killing six people. Two house guards and a priest were among the deceased.

Manesar, a leader of the Bajrang Dal, is sought after for his alleged involvement in the murder of two Muslim men earlier this year. Rumors that Manesar would participate in the religious procession in Nuh are thought to have started the city’s racial tensions, which eventually spread to Gurugram and other places.

113 FIRs have been lodged thus far, and 305 people have been taken into custody in relation to the confrontations. 106 persons in custody are being questioned by the police.

A sizable group of Haryana-based khaps, farmer organizations, and religious leaders held a “Mahapanchayat” on Wednesday in Hisar to denounce the violence and pass various resolutions encouraging peace and cooperation in the area.

Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs all participated in the mahapanchayat, which was sponsored by the Bhartiya Kisan Mazdoor Union. The gathering decided that efforts to reestablish peace shall be made by members of all religions.

Recently, letters that appeared to have been authored by a few panchayat chiefs in the districts of Mahendergarh, Rewari, and Jhajjar appeared online. According to the letters, Muslim traders are no longer permitted to operate in the panchayats’ villages.

The Haryana government’s response to the sectarian violence in Nuh has drawn criticism from farm unions, while khaps have reacted indifferently. While some khaps have called for the arrest of Manesar and condemned the violence, others have called for a boycott of Muslim merchants. Jat community-related khaps are mostly calling for peace among communities and calling for Manesar’s arrest.

According to reports, Manesar posted a social media video in which he claimed to be at the Nuh religious procession and urged his fans to turn out in force. Later, social media users urged him to stay away.

Manesar claimed that the Vishwa Hindu Parishad advised him not to attend the event because they thought it would exacerbate local tensions.

According to P K Agrawal, the head of the Haryana state police, a special investigation team (SIT) will be established to look into Manesar’s involvement in the disturbances.

The 30-year-old is sought by the police in connection with the kidnapping and murder of two Muslim males who were discovered in February in a burned-out car in Bhiwani. Junaid and Nasir, two cattle traffickers, were found dead in a burned-out automobile. The Bajrang Dal has denied any involvement in the crime, despite claims made by the victims’ families in Bharatpur, Rajasthan, claiming the group’s members battered and killed the victims.

Following the communal violence, Nuh’s schools and transportation services were shut down for two weeks. Today, they will return. Additionally, authorities have urged Muslim clergy to lead Friday prayers at their residences.

All educational institutions will be open starting on August 11 due to the area’s regular condition. Similar to this, Haryana State Transport’s bus services will resume in full on August 11. On Friday, the curfew will be loosened. During the relaxation period, ATMs would still be accessible in the municipal corporation areas of Nuh, Tawdu, Punhana, Ferozepur Jhirka, and Pingawa and Nagina blocks, according to a statement from the Nuh administration.
