A 35-year-old man from Odisha’s Koraput district walked several kilometres with his wife’s body on his shoulder after she died

Nabarangpur (Odisha): After his wife died in an auto-rickshaw while returning from a hospital in neighbouring Odisha Andhra Pradesh, a 35-year-old man from Odisha’s Koraput district walked several kilometres with her body on his shoulder.
Police officers located Samulu Pangi and arranged for an ambulance to transport the body of his wife Ide Guru (30) to their home in Sorada village, Pottangi block.

Pangi had admitted his ailing wife to a hospital in Sangivalasa, Odisha Andhra Pradesh’s Visakhapatnam district. However, the doctors there informed him that she was not responding to treatment and advised him to return her home, which was approximately 100 kilometres away.Pangi stated that he hired an auto-rickshaw to return to his village, but Guru died along the way near Vizianagaram. The auto driver then refused to continue the journey, dropping them off on Chelluru Ring Road before departing.

Pangi began walking towards home, which was still about 80 kilometres away, carrying his wife’s body on his shoulder.After some time, he was stopped by Rural Circle Inspector TV Tirupati Rao and Gantyada sub-inspector Kiran Kumar, who had been alerted by locals.

Due to language barriers, the Andhra Pradesh cops initially struggled to understand what Pangi was saying. Later, one person who understands the Odisha man’s language was discovered.After determining what had occurred, police officials arranged for an ambulance to transport Pangi and his wife’s body to his village.While Pangi thanked the officers for their assistance, the residents praised the officers for their prompt response.

This incident is reminiscent of a 2016 incident in Bhawanipatna, Odisha, in which another man, Dana Majhi, walked for approximately 12 kilometres carrying his wife’s body on his shoulder after being denied a hearse by a hospital.


The incident made international headlines and embarrassed the Odisha government.
