India and Pakistan will be in the same group during the September 2023 edition of the Asia Cup

The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) announced on Thursday that the Asia Cup 2023 will be held in September and will be played in a 50-over format. The itinerary and host country have yet to be announced.

Pakistan was the original host of this year’s Asia Cup, but the BCCI is unwilling to play there due to political tensions between the two countries.

Ramiz Raja, the then-chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), had objected to the BCCI’s
stance and had threatened to boycott the 50-over World Cup in India.

India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and a qualification team will compete in the Asia Cup in 2023.

In the UAE, Sri Lanka is the defending Asia Cup champion after defeating Pakistan in the
championship game. Due to the forthcoming ICC T20 World Cup in Australia, the competition
was played in a T20 format.

This year’s Asia Cup will be played in the 50-over format because India will host the ODI World
Cup later this year and all the competing teams will be concentrating on it.

BCCI secretary and ACC president Jay Shah, while releasing the calendar for the next two years
said the schedule “signals our unparalleled efforts and passion to take this game to new heights.

With cricketers from all over the world preparing for spectacular performances, it promises to
be a good time for cricket.” ACC has announced that 145 ODI and T20I matches will be played
during the two-year cycle (between 2023-2024). In 2023, there will be 75 games, and in 2024,
there will be 70 games.
