According to Union Minister of State for Communications Devusinh Chauhan, India has one of the fastest 5G rollout rates in the world, having reached 600 districts in less than 200 days.

Speaking at the second G20 Digital Economy Working Group (DEWG) meeting held here, he claimed that the central government’s public policies were fundamentally motivated by the vision of “Antyodaya” and that they had played a crucial role in the advancement of inclusive welfare and development.

“India has covered 600 districts with 5G in less than 200 days, that is one of the fastest in the world,” he was quoted as saying in a formal statement.

India has the second-largest telecom network in the world and the lowest data rate. The rapid development of homegrown 4G and 5G technologies has surprised the rest of the world. Social Justice and Empowerment Union Minister of State A Narayanaswamy emphasised the importance of the ‘Digital Antyodaya’ strategy and the Accessible India campaign to ensure that all individuals with disabilities can access all areas of society in India.

Alkesh Kumar Sharma, Secretary, MeitY (Ministry of Electronics and IT), welcomed the delegates from G20 Members, invited countries, international organisations, senior officials from MeitY, DoT (Department of Telecommunications), state government, among others, and provided an overview of the three-day event’s schedule during the opening session of the second DEWG meeting.

The importance of connectivity for the GDP and the digital economy was emphasised by K Rajaraman, Secretary of Telecom.

DoT planned three thematic sessions as a part of the side events.

Y.G.S.C. Kishore Babu, DDG-DoT-GoI (Moderator), Sithuraj Ponraj, Director (International Affairs), Government of Singapore, Arun Sharma, Sr. Digital Specialist, World Bank, Rahul Shah, Director-APAC, GSMA, Abhishek Singh, President & CEO, NeGD, and MeitY were among the panellists for the first thematic session, “High Speed Mobile Broadband and its Impacts.”

The last mile high speed connectivity, digital services in social domains (such as education, health, agriculture, etc.), impact and innovation enhancement using AI, IoT, Industry 4.0, and Society 5.0 were all topics covered by the panel.

The release stated that additional steps to close the gaps in smartphone and mobile internet access as well as assistance for senior citizens and people living in rural areas were also discussed.

‘Digital Inclusion – Connecting the Unconnected’ was the subject of the second thematic session.

In order to facilitate the digital transformation, the panel placed a strong emphasis on connecting everyone on the planet.

‘Sustainable Green Digital Infrastructure: Challenges and Opportunities’ was the title of the third and final thematic session of the day.

The Sustainable Development Goals, a smaller carbon footprint, renewable energy, reconditioning/recycling, and effective digital transformation were all topics covered in-depth during the panel discussion on “the digital infrastructure going green and its intersection with physical Infra of other sectors going green.”
