Lahore: Singer-actor Ali Zafar, who is facing criticism for appearing at a celebration for lyricist Javed Akhtar, who made headlines with his remarks regarding the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, claims that insensitive remarks can profoundly hurt feelings and that Pakistan continues to suffer at the hands of terrorism.

Mr. Javed Akhtar said Pakistanis shouldn’t take offence when India brings up the 2008 terror incident while he was in Pakistan last week for a festival in honour of renowned Urdu poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz. He also went to a party where Mr. Zafar sang a few of his own tunes.

Mr. Zafar wrote on Thursday evening on Instagram without mentioning Mr. Javed Akhtar, “I am a patriotic Pakistani and naturally no Pakistani would appreciate any statement against its nation or people especially during an event meant to bring hearts closer than further.”

“Such insensitive and uncalled for words can greatly hurt the sensibilities of so many people,” he continued. “We all know how much Pakistan has endured and continues to suffer at the hands of terrorism.”

In response to criticism of his performance, videos of which were extensively shared on social media sites, Mr. Zafar said he was unaware of Mr. Javed Akhtar comments.

“We are Mumbai residents, and we witnessed the attack on our city. They (the assailants) did not originate in Egypt or Norway. They are still allowed to travel about in your nation. Thus, you shouldn’t get insulted if a Hindustani has a grievance, the 78-year-old added.

He further informed the audience that while Pakistan has never hosted a single Lata Mangeshkar concert, Pakistani artists like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Mehdi Hasan have received warm welcomes in India.
