Kangra tea, a distinctive variety of tea grown in the Kangra district of India’s Himachal Pradesh, has been granted protected geographical indication (PGI) status by the European Commission (EC). According to the notification sent out by the EC on March 22, the PGI will go into effect on April 11, 2023. This action comes at a time when the EC has been holding off on granting Basmati rice, for which India applied in 2018, a similar status. Pakistan is currently falling short of the requirements for recognition, so the EU wants talks between India and Pakistan so that Basmati rice from Pakistan can also be recognised.

Tea from Kangra has a long history.

Kangra tea was first made popular in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh in the middle of the 19th century, and it has a long and illustrious history. A British civil surgeon named Dr. Jameson planted tea seeds in the Kangra valley in 1852 because the British colonial government was interested in establishing tea plantations in India.

In the late 19th century, the Kangra tea industry experienced great success, and Kangra tea rose to fame for its distinctive flavour and aroma. The Kangra tea estate furthered its reputation by taking home a gold medal at the Calcutta Exhibition in 1882.

The “orange rust” blight, which decimated many of the tea plantations in the early 20th century, dealt a blow to the industry. After India gained independence in 1947, the sector of the economy never fully recovered and fell into decline. Kangra tea, according to the Tea Board, has a milder flavour than Darjeeling tea and more body and liquor.

The following is information about the European Commission (EC).

The Commission has a staff of about 32,000 people and is based in Brussels, Belgium. Its work is divided into Directorates-General (DG) departments, each of which is in charge of a particular area of policy, such as trade, competition, the environment, or agriculture. The Commission’s responsibility is to make sure that EU laws and policies are correctly implemented and that member states adhere to EU rules.

In other international negotiations, like those over trade agreements and climate change, the European Commission also represents the EU. To shape EU policies and legislation, it collaborates closely with the other EU institutions, including the European Council and the European Parliament. The European Court of Justice, which is in charge of interpreting and upholding EU law, is responsible for monitoring the Commission’s decisions.
