Finance Minister Kailash Gehlot was slated to deliver the Delhi Budget 2023–24 to the Assembly on Tuesday. Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister, said Monday night that the federal government had suspended it.

On Tuesday morning, hours after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader claimed that the central government had suspended the city government’s budget, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi pleading with him not to do so.

Finance Minister Kailash Gehlot was slated to deliver the Delhi Budget 2023–24 to the Assembly on Tuesday. On the other hand, Kejriwal claimed on Monday night that the Delhi budget had been postponed by the federal government.

“The budget of a state has been halted for the first time in the nation’s 75-year existence. Why are you upset with Delhi residents? Do not halt the Delhi budget, please. In his letter to the Prime Minister, Kejriwal stated that the people of Delhi were pleading with him to approve their budget.

In a statement, Gehlot accused the MHA of sabotaging Delhi’s budget and urged an investigation into the chief secretary and finance secretary of Delhi’s involvement in the delay.

Through the Union home ministry, the President must approve the budget.

Sources at the MHA who were aware of the development refuted Kejriwal’s claims and stated that the permission had been delayed due to some concerns voiced by the lieutenant governor (LG).

The LG has requested an explanation for the Kejriwal government’s decision to spend twice as much on publicity in two years despite only using half of that budget. The LG also requested clarification on why the poor residents of Delhi were not eligible for the benefits of other federal programmes like Ayushman Bharat, for which all funding was provided by the federal government because Delhi was a Union territory (UT), according to an official who spoke on the record.

“On March 10th, the budget was sent to MHA for approval. Yet the document containing MHA’s concerns wasn’t provided to me until today at 6 p.m. (Monday). After getting the CM’s consent, we addressed the MHA’s concerns and returned the paperwork to Delhil’s LG at 9 o’clock this evening. It is quite evident that the objections voiced by MHA are unfounded and appear to be made merely to thwart the Delhi government’s budget for the upcoming year. Sad day for Indian democracy, according to Gehlot’s tweet.

On Tuesday, Kejriwal tweeted, “Delhi is doing very well, despite all the challenges that are being brought around daily. Imagine if these barriers did not exist and all governments collaborated for the benefit of the populace. Delhi would then expand much more quickly.
