Lionel Messi outclasses Ballon d’Or holder Karim Benzema, PSG star Kylian Mbappe to win Best FIFA Men’s Player Award

During the Best FIFA Football Awards in Paris on Tuesday, Lionel Messi, the World Cup-winning captain of Argentina, was crowned the best player in men’s football by FIFA. Messi defeated Real Madrid captain Karim Benzema and PSG colleague Kylian Mbappe to win the illustrious trophy at Salle Pleyel in Paris.

During The Best FIFA Football Awards on Tuesday, Lionel Messi, the captain of the World Cup-winning Argentina team, was named the best player in men’s football by the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). Together with Kylian Mbappe of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Karim Benzema of Real Madrid, Lionel Messi was nominated for the prestigious award. Lionel Messi guided Argentina to its third FIFA World Cup victory in Qatar last year.

Due to his great efforts in men’s football from 8 August 2021 to 18 December 2022, Lionel Messi was voted the Best FIFA Men’s Player award recipient. The PSG superstar has won the coveted prize at Salle Pleyel in Paris a record-tying two times, matching the incredible feats of Cristiano Ronaldo and Robert Lewandowski at the FIFA awards. FIFA gave out the special award in its current form for the first time in 2016 before ending its five-year association with the Ballon d’Or. Earlier in 2019, the 35-year-old received the Best FIFA Men’s Player honour during his trophy-laden time at Barcelona.

In 2007, Lionel Messi attended the FIFA gala for the first time. At the time, Kaka won FIFA World Player of the Year, with the former Barcelona captain coming in second. 15 years later, on Tuesday in Paris, Lionel Messi received his seventh award as the FIFA player of the year. The FIFA World Player of the Year award has already been won by Lionel Messi , one of the most decorated players in the history of the beautiful game, in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019 and 2023.

Mbappe finishes behind Messi, again

After guiding Argentina to victory in the 2022 World Cup, Lionel Messi became the early favourite to win the coveted trophy, adding another another individual honour to his extraordinary collection. Last year’s dramatic FIFA World Cup final saw Lionel Messi ‘sArgentina defeat Mbappe’s France. Mbappe, a colleague of Lionel Messi from PSG, scored an incredible hat-trick in the Qatar World Cup final. Since Geoff Hurst did it in 1966, Mbappe is the first player to score a hat-trick in a FIFA World Cup final.

At the FIFA World Cup final, Mbappe’s goal-scoring prowess forced the then-defending champions France to a 3-3 draw during extra time. Mbappe’s hat-trick was ineffective, though, as Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, defeated France (4-2) in a thrilling penalty shootout at the Lusail Stadium. The Golden Ball, given by FIFA to the exceptional player at the World Cup in Qatar, was won by Lionel Messi over Mbappe. At the World Cup in Qatar, Lionel Messi broke several records and scored seven goals for Argentina. Lionel Messi earned the Golden Ball for being the greatest player in Qatar, while Mbappe took home the Golden Boot for leading the tournament in scoring with eight goals.

Benzema signs off as worthy finalist at FIFA awards

Benzema, a colleague of Mbappe’s from France, missed the World Cup due to an injury. The Ballon d’Or trophy was given to the Real Madrid captain in October of last year. In 46 games last season for Los Blancos, Benzema scored 44 goals. The seasoned French attacker led Real Madrid to Champions League and La Liga championships the previous year. From 2005–2006 until 2021–2022, the 35-year-old was able to score in 17 straight seasons in the Champions League.

Spain’s Putellas voted best women’s player

FIFA deemed Lionel Messi the greatest male player, but Spain’s Alexia Putellas took home the prize for best female player for the second consecutive year. Lionel Scaloni, the manager of the World Cup-winning Argentina team, was chosen as the FIFA men’s coach of the year. For the coach of the year title, Scaloni defeated Pep Guardiola of Manchester City and Carlo Ancelotti of Real Madrid. FIFA selected Emiliano Martnez of Argentina as the top male goalkeeper. Marcin Oleksy, a Polish amputee, earned the Puskas trophy at the FIFA awards for the year’s greatest goal. Oleksy of Warta Poznan had defeated Stal Rzeszow with a magnificent volley goal, which earned him the Puskas trophy in Paris.
