Know the cause of the violence in Manipur in 4 simple steps…

Manipur has about 38 lakh residents. Meitei, Naga, and Kuki are the three main communities in this area. Most Meitei are Hindu. Christianity is practised by the Nga-Kuki. falls under the ST category. There are about 50% of them. The Meitei community predominates in the Imphal Valley, which comprises 10% of the state’s land area. About 34% of Naga-Kuki’s people live there. About 90% of the state’s population resides in this area.

The Meitei community is demanding that they too be given the status of a tribe, which is how the controversy got started. The Manipur High Court received a petition for this from the community.

Manipur, according to the community, merged with India in 1949. Prior to that, they only had the status of a tribe. Following this, the High Court advised the state government to add Meitei to the Scheduled Tribes (ST) list.

What is the Meitei logic? Meitei tribespeople think that their kings summoned Kukis from Myanmar to fight in the war years ago. They then settled there permanently. These people began growing opium after clearing the forest for work. Manipur is now part of a triangle for drug trafficking as a result. Everything is occurring in the open. To combat the Naga people, he established an armed group.

The other tribes are opposed to giving the Meitei community a reservation, which is why the Naga-Kukis are against it. According to reports, the Meitei-dominated Imphal Valley is already home to 40 of the state’s 60 assembly seats. Their rights will be divided in this case by obtaining a reservation for Meitei in the ST category.

The political equations are as follows: Of Manipur’s 60 MLAs, 40 are Meitei and 20 are Naga-Kuki. Only two of the tribe’s twelve CMs have served thus far.
