Margaret Alva, a former union minister, is the vice presidential contender of the opposition

Credent TV | Margaret Alva, a former Union minister and governor, has been named by opposition parties as their candidate for the vice-presidential election that will take place next month.

The choice was made at a meeting held by Sharad Pawar, president of the NCP.

Margaret Alva’s name has been chosen by all 17 opposition parties, according to Pawar, who made the announcement.

Alva, a five-term member of parliament, has held the positions of the governor of Goa and minister at the center.

The meeting of opposition leaders, which started at 3 p.m. and lasted until 4:30 p.m., was attended by Mallikarjun Kharge, the leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha, as well as TR Baalu of the DMK, Sanjay Raut of the Shiv Sena, CPI leaders D Raja and Binoy Viswam, Vaiko of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Keshav

However, no representatives from the Trinamool Congress, the second-largest opposition party in the Rajya Sabha, were present at the meeting. In addition, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) skipped the meeting.

The governor of West Bengal, Jagdeep Dhankhar, was named by the BJP on Saturday as the NDA’s vice presidential candidate.

On August 6, a vote will be cast for the position of vice president of India, and on that same day, the results will be tallied. The deadline for submitting a nomination is July 19.

On August 10, Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu’s tenure in office would come to an end. The nation will hold its 16th vice presidential election this year.

According to Article 66 of the Constitution, the members of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha make up the Electoral College that chooses the Vice-President (both elected and nominated members).

For the July 18 presidential election, the opposition parties declared Yashwant Sinha as their candidate on June 21. Following this, the BJP announced Droupadi Murmu as the NDA’s presidential candidate.
