Bianca Andreescu’s 2023 Miami Open fourth-round match took an unfortunate turn when she was forced to leave the court in a wheelchair after suffering a frightening injury in the second set. A teary-eyed Andreescu was seen in excruciating pain as she was escorted off the court.

The in-form Canadian star lost the opening set to Ekaterina Alexandrova in a tie-break but broke right away at the start of the second for a 2-0 lead. She then slipped and fell in the third game of the set and started screaming in pain, holding her left leg/ankle area.

After being attended to by the on-court medical staff, Bianca Andreescu forfeited the match and left the court because she could no longer play. As she left the court in tears, the crowd gave her a standing ovation.Andreescu forefeited the game and left the court after receiving treatment from the on-court medical staff because there was no way she could continue playing. Standing ovations were given to the Canadian as she exited the court in tears.

The incident reminded me of Alexander Zverev’s injury at the 2022 French Open, which necessitated surgery and forced him to miss more than six months on tour. Hopefully, better news is on the way for Andreescu and her legions of fans.

This week in Miami, the 22-year-old was in excellent form. Bianca Andreescu beat two former Grand Slam champions and a top-10 player to reach the fourth round. She started her campaign with a three-set win over Emma Raducanu, before taking out 7th seed Maria Sakkari in the second round. Andreescu then beat former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin 6-4, 6-4 in the Round of 32.

Bianca Andreescu had been showing signs of a resurgence in 2023

Before the incident on Monday, Bianca Andreescu was having one of her best weeks of the 2023 season at the Miami Open.

She lost early at Adelaide 1 and the Australian Open earlier in the year before making it to the Thailand Open semifinals. Then, she lost to Elena Rybakina, an Australian Open semifinalist, in the first round of the Dubai Tennis Championships as well as the Abu Dhabi Open.Bianca Andreescu was eliminated from Indian Wells in the Round of 32 after losing to Iga Swiatek by the scores of 3-6, 6-7(1). Despite losing to Swiatek, the 2019 US Open champion made a lot of encouraging moves during that contest.

During the claycourt season, Andreescu has runs into the Round of 16 at the Madrid Open and the Italian Open to defend. By the looks of it, she now faces a serious race against time to be ready for those events.
