Perumal Murugan, a Tamil author, is included on the 2023 International Booker Longlist

The International Booker Prize longlist for 2023 has been selected, the Booker Prize Foundation announced on Tuesday in New Delhi. Perumal Murugan is a Tamil author.Aniruddhan Vasudevan’s translation of Perumal Murugan’s 2016 book “Pyre,” from Tamil, places it on the distinguished list. In “Pyre,” a story of terrifying foreboding is set in motion by the elopement of an intercaste couple.

The 56-year-old author is the first from the Tamil language to have a work on the 13-work longlist. The award, which honours translated works, was given to Hindi author Geetanjali Shree last year for her book “Tomb of Sand,” making her the first author from India to receive it.

A “great anatomist of power and, in particular, of the deep, deforming rot of caste hatred and violence,” according to the prize committee, described Perumal Murugan.Pyre, a book by Perumal Murugan, a Tamil Nadu author based in Salem, was described as one of his most significant works.

“A few minutes ago, someone told me the news. I’m overjoyed, and this is fantastic recognition of my writing. “Pyre” deals with honour killing. Honor killing is a significant issue in our nation, and Perumal Murugan told PTI over the phone that he hoped more people would become aware of it as a result of this recognition.

The other titles on the longlist are “Ninth Building,” by Zou Jingzhi, and translated by Jeremy Tiang; “A System So Magnificent It Is Blinding,” by Amanda Svensson; “Still Born,” by Guadalupe Nettle; and “While We Were Dreaming,” by Clemens Meyer; and “The Birthday Party,” by Laurent Mauvignier; and translated by Daniel Levin Becker.

The international prize, which is given annually for a single book that is published in the UK or Ireland and is translated into English, is given in addition to the Booker Prize for Fiction.

A cash prize of 50,000 pounds is given to the winning entry’s author and translator in equal parts.

‘What was very rewarding about this experience was reading books from all over the world, with an extraordinary variety of form and content. “Each of the judges had different tastes, which we tried to reflect in this list,” said LeCHECKla Slimani, chair of the International Booker Prize 2023 judges.

She described the list as a celebration of the power of language and of authors who sought to push formal inquiry as far as possible.

We wanted to honour the literary ambition, panache, and originality that had been achieved, as well as the skill of the translators who had been able to convey all of this,
