In an interview, Raveena Tandon explained why she declined filmmaker Karan Johar’s offer to work on his film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998). She stated that Karan is still unhappy with what she did at the time. She stated that she could not afford to take on minor roles in films back then. She referred to Kajol as her “contemporary” and aspired to play lead roles like her. Kuch Kuch Hota featured prominent performances by Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Rani Mukerji.

Raveena told Smita Prakash for ANI that Karan Johar has yet to forgive her for turning down his offer to act in his film. “Karan Johar still doesn’t forgive me for not doing Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, but he didn’t realise it at the time because Kajol was my contemporary. We began together, and we both played lead roles, so I couldn’t have done Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, where I was in a lower, probably smaller role than Rani’s, which was in a smaller role. Rani benefited from it because she was a newcomer and suddenly she came across as, oh my god, this is awesome. So that would have been the difference, and that’s what I told Karan.”

She continued, saying, “It was just that I wanted to establish myself as an actor rather than doing something with only five scenes and five hit songs. So, even now, there are times when people look no further than my hit songs, which is actually a hindrance. Everywhere I go, people talk about my songs; what about my performances?”

Karan Johar stated during the Talent Next launch that he was extremely disappointed when many leading actors declined to appear in his film. “I had asked everyone,” he explained. Uss film mai main bhikari ban chuka tha (I bacme a beggar already). Eight heroines had already turned down the role of Rani Mukerjee. If I can’t find anyone to play Rani, I’ll have to wear a short skirt to act in the film.
