Panama City, Panama External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has stated that energy and food security are the two most immediate global challenges that the South faces, and that India will work with other countries to address these issues.

Mr. Jaishankar arrived in Panama from Guyana on Monday and attended the 4th India-SICA Ministerial meeting on Tuesday. The Central American Integration System (SICA) is a Central American economic and political organisation.

S Jaishankar thanked SICA in his opening remarks for forging a strong relationship and supporting India at various international and multilateral forums.

“Food security and access to energy are arguably the South’s two biggest immediate global challenges. However, there are also longer-term trends and priorities, such as those related to development, growth, trade, investment, employment, and poverty reduction, which will go beyond the security of food and energy.

“I can assure you that India will be doing more, India is doing more, and we would like to see that translated particularly into our specific relationships,” he said.

According to Mr. Jaishankar, India also thinks that a significant increase in the production of millets on a global scale has the potential to permanently address the issue of food security.

Because it is a good source of iron, vitamins, and micronutrients, it also provides nutritional security.

“Millets have been a part of our tradition for many centuries, and certainly the world would be better served if we were to revive that,” he declared.

He claimed that a new India, one that is a partner in science and technology, a digital deliverer, a startup enthusiast, a pharmacy of the world, and a growing manufacturing power, seeks to collaborate with SICA.

In addition, S Jaishankar stated that India’s 2023 G20 presidency will be a “very special year” for the country.

In a statement, he said, “It is also a year of exceptional responsibility because we take on this responsibility at a time when North-South divides are widening and East-West polarisation is very strong.

“One Earth, One Family, One Future” is the G20’s motto, and it’s the same spirit that the SICA discussions are conducted in, he continued.

He declared that India will cooperate to address issues with climate change, debt, globalisation, and energy and food security.

“India will be a ready partner in the green, digital, health, and gender domains,” he tweeted.

“As developing countries, we must stand together on development and growth-related issues. As India holds the G20 presidency, PM @narendramodi’s Voice of Global South Summit initiative advanced this spirit, he said.

Following his trip to Panama, S Jaishankar arrived in Colombia on Wednesday. There, he will meet with several of the nation’s top officials and discuss bilateral relations with his Colombian counterpart, Alvaro Leyva Duran.

He first met with members of the Indian community in Colombia’s capital city of Bogota.

“Told them about the change happening in India and its effects on the world. highlighted how the capabilities and contributions of a New India are being recognised by the world,” he tweeted.
