Satwiksairaj -Chirag Shetty defeated the Malaysian pair to win the first doubles gold in Asian Badminton, making Indians the champions for the first time in 61 years.
The duo of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, who won India medals at the World Championship, the Commonwealth Games, and the Thomas Cup last year, accomplished another feat. At the Asian Badminton Championships, the pair helped India win its first gold medal in the doubles division.
In the 61-year history of the competition, an Indian pair has won the title for the first time. Additionally, this pair has given India its second championship gold after 1965. Earlier, Dinesh Khanna’s victory in the men’s singles division gave the nation its first gold medal.
In the final game, played on Sunday in Dubai, Chirag and Satwik defeated the Malaysian team of Ong Yew Sin and Teo Yeo Yee 16-21, 21-17, 21-19. One hour and seven minutes were spent on the game.
