Credent TV: An official from India’s Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Monday that a 31-year-old male from Kannur in Kerala had tested positive for monkeypox.
On July 13, the patient arrived from Dubai at the Mangalore airport in coastal Karnataka. A hospital hospitalised him when he showed signs of the illness. The official confirmed that samples submitted by him tested positive for the virus at the National Institute of Virology in Pune.
After the first verified case of monkeypox was found in Kollam district on Thursday, the Union health ministry dispatched a high-level multi-disciplinary team to Kerala to help the state health authorities in initiating public health measures.
After receiving word of a confirmed case of monkeypox in the Kollam district of Kerala, the health ministry issued a memorandum last week stating that it would be sending a “multi-disciplinary central team” to assist the state government of Kerala in examining the infection and implementing “requisite public health measures.”
The second confirmed case of monkeypox in India has been found in the Keralan city of Kannur. In addition to being the second occurrence nationwide, this is also the second cause of monkeypox in the state.
The health ministry has already said that “the Government of India is taking proactive actions” by closely monitoring the situation and collaborating with states in case of any such possible breakout.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), monkeypox is a viral zoonosis (a virus transferred to people from animals) with symptoms comparable to those observed in patients with smallpox in the past, but clinically less severe.
Since smallpox was eradicated in 1980 and vaccination against it was discontinued, monkeypox has become the most concerning orthopoxvirus in terms of public health.
