Shimla Hit by Another Landslide as Himachal Prepares for More Rain, 60 Dead

Since Sunday, dozens of people have killed in landslides in Shimla’s Summer Hill, Krishna Nagar, and Fagli, with another reported this morning in Summer Hill

So far this week, at least 60 people have perished as a result of landslides and flashfloods in Himachal Pradesh, which is home to gorgeous mountains and a major tourist destination that has been hammered by torrential rain since last week.

According to an official, 13 dead were discovered from the debris at Summer Hill, five from Fagli, and two from Krishna Nagar. Several others are believed to be buried beneath the rubble of a temple that collapsed on Monday.

Two persons were killed when a landslide in Shimla’s Krishna Nagar late night washed away about eight homes. Other homes were also abandoned.

On Monday, a cloudburst event in the Solan district claimed the lives of seven people.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh announced today that over 800 people had been saved from the low-lying areas and that evacuation efforts are ongoing while posting a video of the locals getting off a helicopter.

He estimated that 60 people had died in the previous three days. He added that a conference was called to discuss drainage difficulties and structural standards. “The rain has caused a great deal of harm. Weather predictions indicate that Himachal Pradesh and its neighbor Uttarakhand, which has also seen scores of fatalities this monsoon season, will both experience more rain.

The state Congress, which is in power, has asked the central government for assistance and has asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to declare Himachal Pradesh a disaster-hit state.
