Sir David Alan Chipperfield, a civic architect, urban planner, and activist, has been chosen as the 2023 Laureate of The Pritzker Architecture Prize, the prize that is widely regarded as the highest honour in architecture. The illustrious career of Chipperfield spans more than 40 years and includes more than 100 projects, from homes to urban masterplanning in Asia, Europe, and North America to civic, cultural, and academic buildings. Who is Sir David Alan Chipperfield?

Sir David Alan Chipperfield, winner of the Pritzker Prize, was born in London in 1953 and grew up on a farm in Devon, in the south-west of England. He has stated that the array of barns and outbuildings on the farm are the source of his earliest memories of architecture, which made him feel nostalgic. Following his graduation from the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London in 1980 and the Kingston School of Art in 1976, David Chipperfield worked for Douglas Stephen, the late Richard Rogers, a 2007 Pritzker Prize laureate, and Norman Foster before establishing David Chipperfield Architects in London in 1985.

The annual award, which was established by the Hyatt Foundation in 1979, recognises architects whose built work exhibits a talent, vision, and dedication. Francis Kéré, the first black architect to win the award, did so in 2018, while Anne Lacaton and Jean-Philippe Vassal were recognised in 2021 for their joint practise.
