Sonam Wangchuk has received the prestigious Santokbaa Humanitarian Award, which is given to deserving engineers, innovators, educators, and reformers of sustainable development.

Sonam Wangchuk has received the prestigious Santokbaa Humanitarian Award. She is a renowned engineer, innovator, educator, and advocate for sustainable development reform. An industry leader in diamond manufacturing and exports, Shree Ramkrishna Exports (SRK), and its charitable arm, the Shree Ramkrishna Knowledge Foundation (SRKKF), created the award. The Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL) was founded and is directed by Wangchuk.

The Late Santokbaa Dholakia, mother of Govind Dholakia, the Founding Chairman of SRK and SRKKF, has been honoured with the Santokbaa Humanitarian Award, which comes with a cash prize of Rs. 1 crore. The award presentation took place on April 10, 2023, the day after Santokbaa’s passing. At the ceremony, Sonam Wangchuk received the honour at the Hotel Zen in Ladakh. Former Tata Sons chairman Ratan Tata, Nobel Prize winner Kailash Satyarthi, space scientist and former ISRO chairman A.S. Kiran Kumar, and philanthropist and Infosys Foundation Chairperson Sudha Murty are some of the honorees from the past.

Sonam Wangchuk is the inventor of the Ice Stupa technique, which entails the construction of artificial glaciers that store winter water in the form of cone-shaped ice heaps. This technique has been crucial in addressing the issue of water scarcity in Ladakh. Aside from that, he is also involved in addressing other environmental issues. He designed SECMOL’s campus, which runs entirely on solar power and does not use any fossil fuels for heating, lighting, or cooking. His efforts have significantly improved the lives of people in Ladakh, making him an inspiration to those who want to make a difference in the world.
