New Delhi- A special CBI court in Mumbai today acquitted Jiah Khan‘s boyfriend and film star Sooraj Pancholi of abetment charges, nearly a decade after her suicide. On June 3, 2013, Jiah Khan, 25, was discovered hanging in her Juhu home in Mumbai. Sooraj Pancholi was later arrested and charged with abetment of suicide based on a six-page letter purportedly written by Jiah. Rabia Khan, Jiah’s mother, claimed she was murdered.

AS Sayyad, a Special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court judge, ordered the accused to come forward, asking Mr Pancholi, 32, his name, and declaring, “Due to a lack of evidence, Sooraj Pancholi is acquitted.”
If found guilty, Sooraj Pancholi, the son of the on-screen couple Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab, could spend up to 10 years in prison. He went to court with his mother to hear the decision.
In connection with the case, Mr. Pancholi was detained in June 2013 and released on bail in July 2013.
Jiah’s mother Rabia Khan, a significant witness for the prosecution in the case, had stated in court that she thought it was a case of murder rather than suicide. Last year, the Bombay High Court denied her request for a new investigation into the matter.
In response to the verdict, she stated that her daughter was murdered. “The charge of aiding and abetting suicide has been dropped.” But what happened to my child? “This is a murder case…we will go to the high court,” she told news agency ANI, adding that the cause of Jiah’s death “has yet to be determined.”
“While the verdict is based on alleged suicide, I have always maintained that Jiah was murdered.” This, in fact, strengthens my case”,” she told NDTV.
Last week, the judge, AS Sayyad, listened to both sides’ closing arguments before reserving judgement.
The Mumbai police, who initially looked into the case, had seized a letter that the CBI claimed was written by Jiah Khan.
According to the central agency, the note detailed Jiah Khan’s alleged “intimate relationship, physical abuse, and mental and physical torture” at the hands of Sooraj Pancholi, which caused her to commit suicide.
Sooraj Pancholi stated in his final statement to the court on April 12, 2023, that he had been booked in a false case and was the victim of false prosecution and persecution. He claimed that when he learned of Jiah’s death, he broke down and said, “I had lost the most important person in my life and the woman whom I truly loved.”
Jiah Khan is best known for her role in Amitabh Bachchan’s Hindi film “Nishabd.”
