From November 23 to November 25, 2022, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) conducted a surveillance inspection of Air Asia and found that the airline was in violation of DGCA regulations because some of the pilots’ required exercises during the Pilot Proficiency Check/Instrument Rating Check were not completed on time, as required by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

The responsible manager, the head of training, and all designated examiners of Air Asia received show-cause notices from the DGCA as a result of this violation, asking them to provide an explanation as to why no enforcement action should be taken against them for failing to oversee their regulatory obligations. The DGCA initiated the following enforcement measures after reviewing the written response:

In order to compensate Air Asia for violating the relevant DGCA Civil Aviation Requirements, a monetary fine of Rs 20,00,000 was levied.

Due to his failure to carry out his responsibilities in accordance with the relevant DGCA Civil Aviation Requirements, the Head of Training has been removed from his post for a period of three months.

Eight authorized Air Asia examiners will each be fined Rs 3,000 for failing to execute their obligations.

In response to the fine, Air Asia stated that additional simulator training sessions were conducted in collaboration with the DGCA, and urgent corrective action was taken to close the gap.

“We are examining the DGCA order and debating filing an appeal in accordance with the applicable regulatory rules. We want to reaffirm that our activities are operating within the necessary safety margins “the business added.

The DGCA has adopted these enforcement measures to guarantee air travel safety and to make sure all airlines adhere to the standards set by the DGCA and the ICAO. The DGCA’s dedication to upholding the rules and maintaining the highest standards of safety in the aviation industry is demonstrated by the implementation of fines and the removal of the head of training.
It is urged that Air Asia take the appropriate actions to abide by the relevant laws and prevent any such infractions. In order to continue to comply with DGCA standards, the airline must also take action to stop similar infractions from occurring in the future.
