The Geological Survey of India said earlier this week that it has discovered lithium resources for the first time in the nation. The Reasi district in the northern union territory of Jammu and Kashmir has 5.9 million tonnes of lithium inferred resources.

One of the key parts of EV batteries is a non-ferrous metal.

In an effort to advance its electric car aspirations, India has made measures to increase its supply of vital minerals, including lithium. In fact, the mines ministry had already said that it was taking a number of proactive steps to obtain minerals from Argentina and Australia.

India now imports most of its minerals, including lithium, nickel, and cobalt. The country’s development ambitions will be heavily dependent on the discovery in Jammu and Kashmir.
