India was just elected to the Joint UN Program’s Program Coordinating Board and the United Nations (UN) Statistical Commission Narcotic Drugs.

India’s recent election as a member of the Joint UN Program’s Programme Coordinating Board and the United Nations (UN) Statistical Commission Narcotic Drugs is a sign of the nation’s growing influence on the world stage. The choice was made on April 6, 2023, during a vote at the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

India was competing for two seats from the Asia Pacific States category, along with China, South Korea, and the United Arab Emirates. South Korea received 23 votes in the first round of voting, while China and the UAE each received 19 and 15.

China and South Korea tied for second place in the second round with each receiving 25 votes. In accordance with the Council’s rules of procedure, South Korea was chosen by lot to fill the second seat after two rounds of secret ballot voting came up empty.

Statistical Commission of the UN on Narcotic Drugs:

The UN Statistical Commission Narcotic Drugs is in charge of addressing drug control issues and ensuring compliance with international drug control treaties. India’s election to this commission is a significant achievement because it will provide the country with a platform to contribute to global efforts to combat drug abuse and trafficking, as well as the opportunity to share its expertise and best practises in drug control with other members.

The significance of India’s appointment to the Programme Coordinating Board:

The election of India to the Joint UN Program‘s Programme Coordinating Board is also a significant development. The Joint UN Program is in charge of coordinating efforts to combat diseases such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria, among others. India’s membership on the board will give it a stronger voice in global health policymaking and allow it to contribute to efforts to achieve the health-related Sustainable Development Goals.
