UP Establishes a Judicial Panel To Investigate the Murder of Gangster Atiq Ahmed’s Son

Rajeev Lochan Mehrotra, a retired judge from the High Court, and retired DG Vijay Kumar Gupta will serve as the committee’s leaders.The government of Uttar Pradesh has established a two-person judicial commission to look into the killing of politician-turned-gangster Atiq Ahmed’s son Asad during a State-wide encounter.

The formation of a two-member judicial enquiry committee to look into the encounter in Jhansi was announced by the State government on Sunday.

On April 13 in Jhansi, Asad and his accomplice Ghulam in the Umesh Pal murder case were both killed in a shootout with the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force.

Two special investigating teams (SITs) have been formed, as previously announced by the Uttar Pradesh police, to look into the sensational deaths of Atiq Ahmed and Ashraf Ahmed.

In addition, the State government announced the creation of a three-person judicial inquiry committee, which will be led by retired judge Arvind Kumar Tripathi of the Allahabad High Court, to look into the killings of Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf Ahmed. Brijesh Kumar Soni, a retired judge, and Subesh Kumar Singh, a former DGP, are two additional members of the committed.

On the evening of April 15, Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were shot and killed in Prayagraj while being taken for a medical examination by men posing as journalists. Both gangsters were shot at almost point-blank range before collapsing to the ground.Atiq Ahmed was charged in the 2005 slaying of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA Raju Pal as well as the slaying of Umesh Pal in February of this year.
