History of National Youth Day

The government proclaimed January 12th, the anniversary of Swami Vivekananda’s birth, as “National Youth Day” in 1985. Since then, the occasion has been honored in a variety of ways at all of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission centers…

Every year on January 12 in India, the National Youth Day is observed to honor Swami Vivekananda’s birth anniversary. The main goal of this is to ensure that students all over the nation are inspired to learn about Swami Vivekananda’s life, ideas, and philosophy and to put those into practice in their own lives.

The decision was made in 1984 to commemorate Vivekananda’s birthday as National Youth Day, which was first observed on January 12, 1985.

At the time, the government had stated that Swamiji’s philosophy and the ideals he upheld through his life’s work “could be a great source of inspiration” for young Indians.

About Swami Vivekananda

Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa, an Indian mystic who lived in the 19th century, was a teacher of Swami Vivekananda, who was born Narendranath Datta on January 12, 1863. He later rose to prominence as a key player in bringing the Indian darsanas (teachings, practices) of yoga and Vedanta to the West and was credited with promoting interfaith understanding.

Vivekanand was highly regarded as a key figure in the current Hindu reform movements in India and made contributions to colonial India’s conception of nationalism.

He became well-known for his famous speech at the Chicago Parliament of World Religions in 1893, where he spoke about harnessing the youth’s energy.

His methods and teachings had a significant impact on young people, so the Indian government designated January 12 as National Youth Day in 1984.
