Gandhinagar/Gujarat: India has reported its first instance of the Omicron subvariant BF.7, which is reportedly the strain responsible for the current Covid infection flurry in China. A 61-year-old American woman has been identified as the case’s victim. According to reports, the woman was quarantined when the Gujarat Biotechnology Research Center discovered the infection. According to sources, she arrived back in Vadodara from the USA on November 11.
What is Omicron BF.7 variant?
The most common COVID variation at the moment in China, where an increasing number of cases have stunned the entire globe, is Omicron BF.7.
Since its discovery in 2020, the coronavirus that causes COVID has undergone a number of mutations. Omicron has outlasted all other versions and has maintained its position as the dominant variant for more than a year.
What is Omicron Subvariant BF.7?
The Omicron variety BA.5, of which BF.7 is a sub-lineage, has the strongest ability to infect people when it comes to transmission, incubation time, and ability to reinfect or infect even those who have had vaccinations. The US, the UK, as well as European countries including Belgium, Germany, France, and Denmark have already reported finding it.

India on Alert
In the meanwhile, specialists stressed there needs to be ongoing surveillance to keep track of both existing and emerging varieties at the Covid review meeting, which was presided over by Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya. According to an official source, “the low level of immunity in the Chinese population from the prior infection and possibly vaccination as well” may be the cause of the BF.7’s high transmissibility in China.
