Guwahati: A woman Bandana murders her husband and her mother-in-law, cuts them up, and then throws the pieces in the mountains.

An even more spectacular instance of a single dual murder has emerged from Guwahati, while the inquiry into the sensational Shraddha murder case continues. In this instance, a lady murdered her husband and mother-in-law seven months prior, dismembered the bodies, put them in the refrigerator, then discarded the body parts. Once Bandana Kalita, the accused, was taken into custody by police on February 19, the event came to light.

She has admitted to the police that she murdered her husband Amarjyoti Dey and mother-in-law Shankari Dey on August 17, 2016, with the help of her lover and a friend. She further admitted to the authorities that she and her two partners chopped up her husband and his mother and discarded the body pieces in the Meghalayan highlands. According to authorities, the crime was motivated by an extramarital romance and a desire for property, albeit the investigation is still in its early stages.

Amarjyoti Dey reportedly wed Bandana Kalita a few years ago, and the two of them were residing in Narengi, an area of Guwahati city in the east. After a few years of harmony in the marriage, Amrjyoti learned that Bandana was having an affair with a young man named Dhanjit Deka. The husband and wife as a consequence frequently fought.

Shankari Dey, the mother of Amarjyoti Dey, however, is the owner of five properties in the Chandmari district of the city. One of the homes was her exclusive residence, with the other four being rented out. The brother of Shankari Dey, who oversees her money, is in charge of collecting the rent for these buildings. This arrangement did not sit well with Bandana either.

Amarjyoti and Bandana were getting ready to have a divorce as their marital disagreement over these matters intensified. Yet, Bandana reported her husband and mother-in-law missing to the Noonmati Police station seven months prior. Based on the report, the police launched an investigation, but they were unable to locate them or learn of their locations.

Once some time had passed, Bandana filed a new lawsuit, this time stating that Shankari Dey’s brother had been squandering the funds in his five bank accounts. This turned out to be a mistake for her, though. As the police investigated the bank accounts, they discovered that Bandana Kalita had taken Rs. 5 lakh using ATM cards from her mother-in-bank law’s account. Police began to suspect her as a result of this, and on February 17th, they detained her after obtaining further evidence in support of their suspicions.

Yesterday, Bandana eventually admitted to the crime while being questioned by the police. She admitted to killing Shankari Dey at her Chandmari home on August 17 with the aid of a young man by the name of Arup Das, she said authorities. The corpse was then cut into pieces, and the fragments were stored in the refrigerator.

Later, on August 21, Bandana Kalita strangled her husband with the assistance of her boyfriend, Dhanjit Deka. Then they dismembered his corpse as well and placed the fragments in plastic bags. Following that, their second partner, Arup Das, joined them, and they went and gathered Shankari Dey’s remains.

They left the pieces in deep gorges near Cherapunji in the Dawki region of Meghalaya after driving there. She cleaned the crime scene after that and went home. According to her neighbours, she was burning her bedding and clothes on the house’s terrace that day.

Bandana Kalita was detained while she was living with her parents at their home in Guwahati’s Panikhaiti neighbourhood after the killings. After Bandana Kalita’s admission of guilt, Dhanjit Deka was detained in Tinsukia and Arup Deka was apprehended in Guwahati’s Khanapara. Arup Das joined them, and together they gathered Shankari Dey’s remains.

To find the victims’ bodies, a sizable police squad travelled to Meghalaya, and Dawki has yielded several body pieces. According to reports, Shankari Dey’s decapitated body as well as some blankets and clothing in a polythene bag had been found. The corpse is missing one hand and its head. Amarjyoti Dey’s corpse has not yet been found.
