Delhi Mayoral Election, AAP

New Delhi: Today is probably the day that Delhi elects a mayor following three unsuccessful tries. While statistics suggest that the incumbent Aam Aadmi Party would win the election, the BJP has suggested that a last-minute upset is possible.

Here are the latest developments in the Delhi Mayor polls:

  • After the AAP’s convincing victory in the Supreme Court, voting has started for the elections that are being held. The Mayoral elections have been delayed three times since the civic elections in December because of a protracted conflict between the AAP and the BJP.
  • The highest court was questioned by AAP candidate Shelly Oberoi on the BJP’s claim that the alderman, 10 members chosen by the lieutenant governor, are eligible to vote.
  • A bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said nominated members cannot vote in the election. “Nominated members cannot go for election. The constitutional provision is very clear,” the bench observed.
  • Six members of the Standing Committee, the Deputy Mayor, and the Mayor will all be chosen on the same day after the Mayor.
  • AAP is most likely to win three seats and the BJP two in the election for the Standing Committee. The battle is for the sixth chair.
  • If the alderman had been permitted to cast a ballot, the BJP’s support would have increased from 113 to 123. In the 274-member parliament, where AAP has 150 votes, the majority threshold is 138.
  • As the Standing Committee is seen to be the most influential body in the civic body, the BJP may have won a significant portion of it, even if it would not have had an impact on the outcome of the Mayor election. AAP council members have accused the Congress of “deal-making with the BJP” in response to the party’s announcement that it will abstain.
  • 250 elected council members, seven Lok Sabha and three Rajya Sabha MPs from Delhi, and 14 MLAs make up the electoral college for the mayor. 13 AAP MLAs and a BJP member were proposed as candidates by the Speaker of the Delhi Assembly.
  • In the first municipal election held following the merger of the MCD and the redistricting of seats last year, the AAP won 134 of the 250 wards. After 15 years of holding power within the city body, the BJP came in second.
  • The Delhi government had not been consulted when the 10 alderman were chosen, which alarmed the AAP. Election for mayor had been delayed three times due to the oaths taken by the ten nominated aldermen and the issue of their voting. The Supreme Court hearing required a fourth postponement of the election.
