Manmohan Singh calls for voters to defend democracy and the constitution against a “despotic regime” and accuses Prime Minister Modi of using offensive language

Manmohan Singh, the former prime minister, charged on Thursday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was targeting the opposition or a particular segment of society with “hateful, unparliamentary terms.”

Singh wrote to Punjabi voters in advance of the seventh round of the Lok Sabha elections on June 1, urging them to seize their “last opportunity to safeguard democracy and our Constitution against the persistent attacks of a despotic regime, attempting to unleash dictatorship in India.”

According to Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister Modi “indulged” in the most vile of hate speech.

He claimed that PM Modi diminished the honor of public debate.

“I have been paying close attention to the political conversation during this election campaign. Modi ji has made hateful remarks that are just meant to cause division. These remarks are of the most extreme kind. Singh stated, “Modi ji is the first prime minister to diminish the seriousness of the position of the prime minister and, consequently, the dignity of public discourse.

“No prime leader in history has used language so divisive, anti-parliamentary, and crude in order to disparage the opposition or a certain segment of the public. Additionally, he has accused me of making several untrue claims. Never in my life have I chosen one community above another. That is the BJP’s exclusive copyright,” the top Congressman declared.

Singh was said by Prime Minister Modi to have stated that Muslims have the “first right on the country’s resources.”

The former prime minister called the BJP’s Agniveer Scheme ill-conceived and criticized it for being imposed on the armed personnel. He highlighted what he called “fake nationalism” and accused the BJP of eroding bravery, patriotism, and service by restricting its validity to just four years.

“The departing administration terribly betrayed those who trained for regular recruitment. The young Punjabi man, a farmer’s son, who once thought he would enlist in the military to serve his country for four years, is now reconsidering. Agniveer Scheme puts the country’s security at risk. Thus, the Congress party has pledged to do away with the Agniveer Scheme,” he continued.
