Sanjay Raut, the leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT), admitted today that Uddhav Thackeray, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, had proposed the Barsu site in the coastal Ratnagiri district for a refinery project, but that his party would support the locals if they objected.
Over 100 women were among the protesters who attempted to block a road by lying on the ground in the Barsu and Solgaon areas of the district, about 400 kilometres from Mumbai, in order to prevent government vehicles from entering the proposed location of the refinery.
Speaking to reporters, Mr. Raut retaliated against Industries Minister Uday Samant, saying that rather than “flaunting” the protesters’ suggestion in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Barsu, he should go there and meet them in person.

In an apparent dig at Uddhav Thackeray and his MLA son Aaditya Thackeray, who handled the environment portfolio in the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government (November 2019 to June 2022) Mr. Samant claimed on Tuesday that “misunderstandings” were being purposefully created about the project for political mileage. He also denounced “politics of double standards.”
Locals opposed the Nanar (site), so Thackeray then proposed Barsu as a potential substitute. Scrubland, that much is true. However, Shiv Sena (UBT) will not support the project if locals are against it. This is where we stand politically, Mr. Raut said.
He (Thackeray), the chief minister, proposed a different land. There couldn’t have been any opposition at that time (in Barsu). But now, there is opposition to this. The letter from Thackeray to PM Modi is worthless to us if the locals believe they will die but retain their right to their land. Mr. Raut questioned Mr. Samant about the reasons why expensive projects left Maharashtra.
An official reported that during a demonstration against the proposed oil refinery on Tuesday, the Ratnagiri police detained 111 people, the majority of whom were women.
Over 100 women were among the protesters who attempted to block a road by lying on the ground in the Barsu and Solgaon areas of the district, about 400 kilometres from Mumbai, in order to prevent government vehicles from entering the proposed location of the refinery.
In the midst of the demonstrations, the Shiv Sena (UBT) decided to start an agitation against the proposed oil refinery at Barsu on Tuesday.
Local residents are concerned that the megaproject will have a negative impact on the fragile biodiversity of the coastal Konkan region, as well as their livelihood.
