Context of Ongoing Violence

This incident is part of a larger pattern of violence that has erupted between different ethnic groups in Manipur. Since May 2023, clashes between the majority Meitei community and tribal groups, particularly the Kukis, have intensified. The violence initially stemmed from disputes over political representation and land rights but has since spiraled into broader ethnic conflicts.

Ethnic Tensions

  • The Meitei community predominantly resides in the Imphal valley, while Kukis inhabit the surrounding hills.
  • The ongoing strife has led to significant loss of life and widespread displacement among both communities.

Community Reactions

In response to this latest violence, community leaders from both sides have called for investigations into the incident. The Kuki-Zo Council announced a total shutdown to mourn the loss of their volunteers who died during the encounter. They condemned the actions of security forces and demanded accountability for what they termed as an attack on their community.

Government and Security Forces’ Stance

Manipur’s Director General of Police (DGP), Rajiv Singh, emphasized the challenges faced by law enforcement in restoring peace to a fractious region. He stated that despite these challenges, efforts are ongoing to stabilize the situation through coordinated actions with various security agencies.

About Kuki-Zo Council (KZC)
