E3 2023 “simply did not garner the sustained interest,” according to a report.

E3 2023 is no longer taking place this year in any capacity, either physically or virtually. After an initial report from IGN based on emails sent to its members, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) confirmed the news on Twitter. Despite being a well-known brand, E3 in 2023 “simply did not garner the sustained interest necessary” to carry out the event in a way that would demonstrate the size and power of the games industry, according to the report. The big three video game companies—PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo—withdrew from the summer video game event in January, leaving hardly any significant publishers behind.

IGN’s report prompted ReedPop, the organisation behind E3 2023, to make a public statement. Kyle Marsden-Kish, Global VP of Gaming at ReedPop, said, “This was a difficult decision because of all the work we and our partners put into making this event happen, but we had to do what’s right for the industry and what’s right for E3.” He added that many publishers and developers interested in the event wouldn’t even have playable demos ready for showcase. He continued, “For those who did commit to E3 2023, we’re sorry we can’t give you the showcase you deserve and have come to expect from ReedPop’s event experiences.

The event, which was to be the first E3 in person since the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns, was scheduled to take place from June 13 to 16 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. In 2021, it adopted a virtual, digital strategy, and in 2022, the event was once more postponed.

Ubisoft had previously committed to attending E3 2023, but this week they pulled out. The publisher will now host its own, distinct Ubisoft Forward Live event on June 12 in Los Angeles as it has decided to “move in a different direction.” Though CEO Yves Guillemot promised there would be “lots of things to show,” more information on the subject will be made public in due course. Following that declaration, even Tencent and Yakuza’s publisher Sega confirmed that they would not be attending E3.

Similar to Ubisoft, Microsoft will host an Xbox Games Showcase on June 11 with a detailed preview of the upcoming sci-fi role-playing game Starfield scheduled for a later time. To showcase new games and updates, Nintendo and PlayStation will keep hosting their respective online events. Alternatively, they might be collaborating with Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest; it’s currently unclear.

Since the pandemic era of 2020, Keighley’s month-long Summer Game Fest has supplanted E3 as the primary venue for the industry to unveil the most significant games and news. A physical booth does not require publishers to spend a lot of money because the event is digital and only available online. The festival for this year begins on June 8 and has already stolen Xbox and Ubisoft as some of its main highlights from E3. Funny enough, the Summer Game Fest 2023 released its brand-new promotional trailer immediately following ESA’s announcement and will be broadcast live from the YouTube Theatre in Los Angeles.
