Fadnavis: In Rajasthan and Gujarat, destitute families sell their daughters as brides

448 people have been detained in total for offences related to kidnapping women for marriage in 2021.

Devendra Fadnavis, the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra, claimed on Friday that destitute Maharashtrian girls are sold to various regions of Rajasthan and Gujarat for the purpose of marriage.

He informed the Maharashtra Legislative Council in writing that 24 cases involving the kidnapping of women for the purpose of marriage had been filed in 2023 in response to a question posed by member Mahadev Jankar. 448 people have been detained in total for offences related to kidnapping women for marriage in 2021.

MLCs Vilas Potnis and Sunil Shinde asked another question in the Legislative Council, and Fadnavis responded in writing. He stated that in 2022, 614 instances involving sexual assault of underage girls and another 370 crimes involving sexual assault of women above the age of 18 had been reported. Meanwhile, 6,133 offences involving aggression against women have been reported in 2022.

There have been 4,437 women over the age of 18 reported missing in Bombay alone in the year 2022, compared to 1,330 minor girls who have gone missing overall. 1,097 of the 1,330 missing minor girls have been located, while 3,031 women over the age of 18 have also been located.
