The outdated lock icon in Google Chrome’s address bar will be replaced by a new security icon to signify a security-neutral access point to site settings.

A new “tune” icon will take the place of Chrome’s lock icon, which was previously regarded to be a sign of a website’s security. The updated emblem will no longer imply that a website is safe to use or can be relied upon.

When the lock icon was first presented, it stood for HTTPS encryption, which encrypts connections on websites. As a result, it was impossible to eavesdrop on or otherwise tamper with the connection between the user’s browser and the website. The majority of websites today, including phishing websites, use the HTTPS protocol, therefore this is no longer the case, according to Google, which stated in a blog post that the lock icon no longer serves as a reliable indicator of a website’s trustworthiness.

The sign, according to Google, makes it easier to obtain permission limitations and additional security information.
