Google to launch ChatGPT competitor ‘Bard’ –

A set of “trusted testers” will evaluate the conversational AI service before it is made available to the general public, according to a blog post by Sundar Pichai.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai has said that the tech giant would soon release a chatbot powered by artificial intelligence (AI) dubbed Bard’ in an effort to compete with the success of the ChatGPT tool supported by Microsoft.

The conversational AI service will be evaluated by a group of “trusted testers,” per Pichai’s blog post, before being made available to the general public in the upcoming weeks.

The CEO of Google and its parent company Alphabet, Sundar Pichai, said on Monday that Bard “can be an outlet for creativity and a launchpad for curiosity,” adding that a nine-year-old would be able to understand complex topics like recent discoveries from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope thanks to the chatbot.

Google’s statement comes in the wake of widespread rumours that Microsoft will soon integrate the AI chatbot ChatGPT into its search engine Bing as a result of a multi-billion dollar investment in the company that developed it, OpenAI, according to the BBC.

Launched in November 2022, ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer) can produce writing that resembles human speech, songs, marketing copy, news items, and student essays, and is more dependent on the input it receives.

Pichai, 50, wrote in his blog that Bard, which is based on Google’s current LaMDA large language model, “seeks to combine the breadth of the world’s knowledge with the power, intelligence, and creativity of our large language models.”

Pichai wrote in the blog post that Bard “seeks to integrate the depth of the knowledge of the world with the strength, intelligence, and creativity of our massive language models.”

Google’s AI services should be “bold with innovation and prudent in our approach,” according to Pichai. He made no mention of how Bard would be stopped from disseminating offensive or damaging material, though.

He claimed that when Google first makes Bard available, it will include a “lightweight model” of LaMDA that uses less processing power and enables the tech giant to scale to more people and collect more input.

Pichai stated, “We’re excited for this phase of testing,” and added that Google will combine external feedback with internal testing to ensure that Bard’s responses uphold a high standard for quality, safety, and informational veracity.

We must act bravely and responsibly when introducing experiences based on these models to the outside world. We’re dedicated to safely developing AI because of this, he said in the blog.

On Monday, Pichai added that Google’s popular Search function will soon start to roll out AI-powered tools.

“Soon, you’ll see AI-powered features in Search that distill complex information and multiple perspectives into easy-to-digest formats,” Pichai wrote. “Whether that’s seeking out additional perspectives, like blogs from people who play both piano and guitar, or going deeper on a related topic, like steps to get started as a beginner, you can quickly understand the big picture and learn more from the web.” AKJ PTI
