Hyderabad’s double-decker buses bring back memories for the elderly

Hyderabad’s famous double-decker buses are about to make a reappearance in an electric form, over two decades after their initial appearance. Old-timers say it’s a nostalgic walk down memory lane, but young people say they can’t wait to board the buses to take selfies.

Amarnath Reddy still has very clear memories of traveling with them. I always favored using the double-decker bus back then. To have a clear view of the city, I would have preferred the top deck with the front seat. It was very joyful. I’m happy that this generation will also be able to experience it.

Nizam’s Transport Services originally launched double-decker buses in the colors green and red during the reign of Mir Osman Ali Khan. 30 Albion CX 19 models are said to have been transported to Hyderabad in 1946 from England.

The Hyderabad Allwyn Metal Works Limited disassembled the 56-seater buses after they were shipped by sea in numerous pieces. Numerous double-decker buses were altered in 1996 to become one-and-a-half-decker buses with open rooftops.

Following the release of the film “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge,” open rooftop buses became popular.

“I have only ever seen double-deckers in pictures so far. I really want to go through it. They will undoubtedly be helpful for regular bus riders, adds student Pradeep.

Due to high operational and maintenance expenses, a shortage of replacement parts, and the development of flyovers, the buses were phased out in 2003.

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) ordered six electric double-decker buses under the direction of Minister KT Rama Rao, of which three were delivered and officially opened on Tuesday.

The HMDA intends to increase this fleet to 20 buses and the final three buses are also anticipated soon. Each bus costs Rs. 2.16 crore and comes with a seven-year AMC.
