Indian-American Richard Verma Confirmed For Top US State Department Position On Thursday, the 67-26 vote confirmed Richard Verma, 54.

Richard Verma, an Indian-American lawyer, diplomat, and executive, has been confirmed by the US Senate to serve as the Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources, a position that is typically regarded as the CEO of the influential State Department in the US government.

On Thursday, Mr. Verma, 54, was confirmed by a vote of 67-26.

Prior to becoming majority leader of the United States Senate, he served as Democratic Whip, Minority Leader, and National Security Advisor to Senator Harry Reid of the United States.Richard Verma has held positions as Senior Counselor at the Albright Stonebridge Group, Partner and Senior Counselor at Steptoe and Johnson LLP, and Vice Chairman of The Asia Group.

He was a Judge Advocate in the United States Air Force and is a veteran.

Born in 1968 to an Indian immigrant, Mr. Richard Verma was raised in Pennsylvania. He received a US Air Force scholarship to attend a private college. He received a B.S. from Lehigh University, a J.D. with honours from American University, an LLM with honours from Georgetown University Law Center, and a PhD from Georgetown University.

He has received many honours and decorations, including the Meritorious Service Medal from the United States Air Force, the Distinguished Service Medal from the Department of State, and the International Affairs Fellowship from the Council on Foreign Relations.

Mr. Richard Verma is a former member of the Weapons of Mass Destruction and Terrorism Commission who was appointed to the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board.He is a trustee for The Ford Foundation and sits on many other boards, including those of Lehigh University and the National Endowment for Democracy.
