This one is now a surprise offering for theatres and exhibitors. With the exception of Pathaan and, to a lesser extent, Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar, Bollywood is now struggling to produce blockbusters that will make money. Enter Keanu Reeves’ John Wick: Chapter 4, which is now unexpectedly gaining attention.

Although the first three films’ box office performance in India was hardly noteworthy, the franchise has gained fame abroad. However, with good placement on OTT, it has recently had a comeback.

One questioned if there would be something that would draw audiences in large numbers to theatres prior to the release of Bholaa given that even other Hollywood productions haven’t performed well (Shazam! Fury of God has been rather ordinary) and the south has failed miserably (Kabzaa is one of the biggest disasters of all time). This is what happened with John Wick: Chapter 4, which initially shocked everyone with its Thursday paid previews, which brought in 1.88 crores, and then the opening day figures, which came in at 6.25 crores*.

Once again, the idea of IMAX opening advance bookings far in advance paid off as the shows started to fill up and more demand was generated. By the time the advance began showing at all locations, including another premium version 4DX, word had been well known that this Hollywood heavyweight was a reliable product. The supply had been gradually increased. Add to that the fact that the early reviews were largely favourable, and theatres are essentially bracing for a winner in hands given the 8.13 crores* already received.
