NORTHKOREA-MISSILES: According to North Korea, a test to create multiple warhead missiles was successful

SEOUL -North Korea’s main media agency, KCNA, reported on Thursday that the country had successfully carried out a significant test aimed at producing missiles carrying multiple warheads. South Korea, however, dismissed this claim as “deception” to cover up a botched launch.

According to North Korea, the test was conducted on Wednesday with an intermediate-range ballistic missile’s first-stage solid-fuel engine.

The message was sent the day after the military of South Korea announced that North Korea had fired what looked to be a hypersonic missile off its east coast, but it burst in midair.

Aiming to develop multiple independently targetable reentry vehicle technologies, KCNA reported the rocket successfully separated warheads that were precisely guided to three predetermined targets.

“The purpose was to secure the capability to destroy individual targets using multiple warheads,” added the statement.

The military of South Korea reported that an examination conducted jointly by the US and South Korean militaries indicates that the missile exploded during its first flight.

“Today, North Korea revealed something, but we think it’s just an attempt at fabrication and exaggeration,” Joint Chiefs of Staff spokesperson Lee Sung-joon said at a briefing.

He also suggested that the images that the North had posted, which claimed to be from Wednesday’s test, were probably fake or recycled images from an earlier launch.

Following last week’s summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un, South Korea, the United States, and Japan denounced the launch as a major danger and a breach of U.N. Security Council resolutions. They also issued a warning against further provocations.

The two leaders inked a mutual defense contract during Putin’s first visit to North Korea in 24 years, which Yoon Suk Yeol, the president of South Korea, referred to as “anachronistic” but which Kim praised as an alliance.

In a separate message, North Korean Defense Minister Kang Sun Nam denounced as a “inexcusable, heinous act against humanity” Ukraine’s strike on Crimea using ATACMS missiles provided by the United States, which Russia claimed resulted in at least four fatalities and 151 injuries.

According to him, the attack demonstrated how Washington has supported terrorism as a “top-class state sponsor.”

According to the U.S. State Department, Ukraine received arms from Washington on Monday to enable it to protect its sovereign territory, which includes Crimea.
