PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist, was defeated in the final of the Madrid Spain Masters Super 300 badminton tournament by Indonesia’s Gregoria Mariska Tunjung. Tunjung, world number 12, did not give him a chance to make a comeback in the final, winning both games 8-21, 8-21. This is Tunjung’s first victory over Sindhu.

In the semi-finals, Tunjung defeated Marin, and Sindhu defeated Min.

The top seed and former Olympic champion Carolina Marin was defeated in the semi-finals by Tunjung, who was seeded twelve. The Singaporean Yeo Jia Min was defeated by Sindhu in the semi-finals, 24-22, 22-20. Sindhu was thought to be the superior player going into this match. Before this match, Sindhu and Yeo Jia Min had faced off three times, with Sindhu coming out on top each time. The most recent encounter between the two athletes took place in Birmingham during the 2022 Commonwealth Games semifinals, which PV Sindhu won 21-19, 21-17. Both players’ records currently stand at 4-0.

This year was the first time they reached the finals.

This is PV Sindhu first appearance in a tournament final this year. Sindhu, the second seed, struggled to find her rhythm after returning from a long injury layoff and failed to advance past the second round in the last few tournaments this year.
